SUMMARY:DJA Community Meeting
DESCRIPTION:This month’s community meeting will be held on November 27\, 2025 from 6PM – 8PM EST. This month’s gathering will include a training session on how journalists can create a sustainable freelance business in a way that is informed by Disability culture and accessible business practices. It will be presented by DJA’s John Loeppky. \nEvent Description: \nHow to be a Disabled Freelancer: Much like when you first realize you’re Disabled\, a time when your world is flooded with accessibility questions\, the building of a Disability-led freelance journalism business has many of the same challenges. How do you pitch? How does accounting work? Can you make a go of it? Should you? For many Disabled people\, freelancing is the only accessible career path in a world where inclusive workplace is more buzzword than reality. In this training session DJA team member John Loeppky will lead participants through how he built his business\, what he would do differently\, and answer questions about how participants can explore whether freelancing is right for you. John will also answer some frequently asked questions\, highlight some of the pitfalls of the industry\, and showcase some of the inclusive practices he uses to make a living as a freelancer without putting too high a tax on his body-mind. \nAs a rule\, all information shared among group members in these meetings should remain private and contained to the meeting space. Group members who are concerned about security and privacy should feel free to use an alternate name or otherwise remain anonymous. Group members should feel comfortable participating with the cameras off and/or through the chat function if necessary. With the permission of those in the space\, the training session portion of this event may be recorded. \nThis call will be CART captioned (or\, in the unusual event of CART provider absence\, auto-captioned through Zoom). Please let us know below if you require any other accommodations (described in registration intake form). \nClick here to register for the event: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/3aiBWLx8Q6a9Muv9A5exGA \nClick here to register as a DJA member  and be added to our mailing list: New Member Registration. \nWe maintain a living document of Community Agreements here. \nPlease reach out to ariana.martinez@discojourno.com if you have questions about access or other aspects of this meeting space.

SUMMARY:DJA Community Meeting
DESCRIPTION:This month’s community meeting will be held on Thursday\, January 29\, 2026 from 6PM – 8PM EST. This month’s gathering will include a training session on how media workers can enter into or sustain themselves in the audio production world through a disability-led lens. It will be presented by DJA’s Ariana Martinez. \nEvent Description: \nThe Audio Production Landscape for Media Workers. Ariana will draw from their professional experience working as an audio producer\, sound designer\, and engineer for public broadcasting\, for-profit podcast production companies\, and independent media initiatives to explain how and why media workers in other disciplines might find ways to learn audio production skills and network within the audio journalism landscape. We’ll discuss what’s needed to build a low-cost\, high-value audio production setup in terms of software and equipment\, what kinds of projects audio storytelling might the useful for\, and where to find community and professional development opportunities to help build audio skills. This is not an audio editing or production tutorial\, but DJA is considering this offering if members express interest in a more hands-on technical training. SUMMARY:DJA Community Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by DJA team members\, this is a space for Disabled journalists to come together for support\, information-sharing\, and community building. This month’s  event is being hosted on May 28 from 6-8 PM Eastern and will focus on a professional development presentation led by DJA team member John Loeppky. \nPitching as a journalist\, whether you’re inside of a newsroom as a staffer or outside of one as a freelancer\, can be daunting. How long should it be? What should you include? Is it wasted labor? Can I pitch multiple people at once? All good questions with complicated answers. During this session\, John will lead participants through a series of activities so that they can leave the session with a pitch that is fleshed out and\, with a few tweaks\, should be ready to go to your outlet of choice. John will give some examples—the good and the bad–of pitches he’s sent and will help bring much needed story concepts to fruition. The meeting may be recorded with the permission of those in attendance to help improve DJA’ educational offerings and to be provided in future to program participants. \nThis call will be CART captioned (or\, in the unusual event of CART provider absence\, auto-captioned through Zoom).
